sparkplug problem

while winterizing, after fogging the engine, I pulled the four plugs and fogged each cylinder too. #4 plug was oily, no more so than the others from the fogging. But it had almost no gap, the metal adjuster for the gap was almost touching the plug cone, no other deformity or deterioration other than that. I put the plugs in myself in June correctly gapped, maybe 100 hrs. usage this summer. Any thoughts on what could have caused this condition? The tuneup was noticeably deteriorated by the end of the season, naturally with this plug in this condition!
thanks.

Re: sparkplug problem

You sure you didn't drop it or bounce it against something putting it in or taking out?

Re: sparkplug problem

hard to imagine what could simply cause a plug gap to close up other than something physically hitting the electrode..

nothing much in there to hit it.. there is plenty of clearance.. so i think its most likely u knocked it putting it in..

regap it and keep an eye on it next year when u run your boat just to put your mind at rest..

also make sure u have the correct plugs in there.. I.E. not long reach when u should have short reach for example..

trog

Re: sparkplug problem

I don't remember dropping it before putting it in. How would detonation cause the plug gap to close, and wouldn't it have been running really rough all season if that was the cause?

Trog- I will double check the plugs for long vs. short. these were the same as the plugs the last owner had used, but they weren't the exact same plugs the manual calls for.

Thanks.
