Not sure if this is the place to put this in but i have a 1972 Crestliner. not sure the model but i know the spedometer does not work and i think its the cable that goes in the water. If anyone can tell me how this cable works and a replacement part i need. It looks like a squirel chewed it and a part is missing. Also not sure if you need this the engine is a 1972 Johnson 65hp and the shape of the boat is a trihaul. I am restroing this boat because my grandmother gave it to me.

Re: Spedometer

The "cable" is actually an air hose. As water pressure pushes up from the transom, the pressure it converted to MPH at the dash. The pitot needs to extend below the transom in order to work properly.

Re: Spedometer

How accurate are those types of speedometers? I have GPS and just unhooked the old speedometer off the dash when i got my boat cause it did not work, but i would like to have that gage working and re-install it if it is somewhat accurate. My outboard's lower unit has that pickup buile into it but i have it disabled for the moment cause i do not have the gage installed in the dash. Im just wondering how accurate can that be? I dosent seem like it could be that consistant. Just wondering? This is not really electrical so im going to post this question in restoration as well.

Re: Spedometer

At slow speeds they are not very accurate but they can be spot on (give or take a tad) at 25 - 30 MPH on up. Some are just more accurate than others -- even within the same brand and model. Unless you a competition skier or have other reasons for extremely accurate speed readings, they serve the purpose well and relatively inexpensively.

Re: Spedometer

Thread hijack.

Im trying to get the spedo working, its mechanical so it has the hose.

I disconnected it from a coupling near the bottom shell of the engine and blew the line out with some compressed air.(line that goes in the water)

and just wondering what else would have to be done or am i good to go.

not like this matters but its a 88merc
