The speedometer on my boat does not work, how do I trouble shoot it? It's a Sting Ray 140 i/0 1982

Probably the simplest device on your boat. Either the tube from the pitot on the back of the boat is plugged, the pitot is plugged, or water got into the gauge and froze. No electronics involved whatsoever (except for the light).

Trouble shoot by removing the rubber tube from the pitot and blow into it. If the speedo needle moves you know the blockage is in the pitot itself. If not remove the tube from the back of the speedometer and see if you can blow through the tube. If not the tube is plugged, if you can blow air through the tube chances are the speedo is junk or the tube has a hole/split in it. These were not the most reliable devices and since it is 24 years old it could be anything.

8X56. I'll be in Watkins Glen soon to kill some fish. I haven't been out yet. Been too busy. Even missed opening day at Catherine.

Re: Speed odemetar not working

Thanks, the boat sat for two years and I bet some mud daubers got into the tube and plugged it. My only problem is that the boat is in the slip and I really don't want to pull it out. I do have speed on my fish finder, but did want to get the speedometer working. Thank for all the good advice.
