I have a 63 evinrude big twin 40hp. It is on a 15ft fiberglass boat with a 15hp troller. Motor is in good shape 100psi compression. What speed should I get out of it. With two people in it the gauge shows about 19to 20 mph. Does this sound about right.

Re: Speed of boat

Difficult to know for sure the true speed without
using a gps.If it seems to be just a little over planing speed it is probably fairly accurate.
Without knowing real size and weight its Difficult to know where your at. You are probably running a little slow but could tell better with approx. weight of boat prop pitch, wot rpm.Tachs are available at Tiny tach for about 40 dollars.
Be sure to tell them it is a 2cylinder 2 cycle.
Your motor may have an adjustable high speed jet.
It would appear on the front of the carb.
Motor trim and weight distribution can affect
speed.
Check for wide open throttle.
Anti ventilation plate should be approximately even with the bottom of the boat.If too low it will slow things down.If there is room to raise it
1 inch it could give you close to 3 mph.
