Re: speedometer doesnt work

I am guessing this is an outboard? I experienced the same problem with a 1996 Mercruiser 3.0LX with an A1 Outdrive. I am not sure if you have a physical little wheel that spins that gives an imput to your speedometer, or if there is a tube that runs from the gauge all the way to the outdrive. In case of the small wheel, first make sure that the wheel is connected and spins freely. In the case of not having the analog wheel, ensure this tube is connected to the outdrive (sometimes they disconnect). Now there is a small hole on the inboard side of your outdrive that water flows into which exerts air pressure on the previously mentioned tube that feeds to the gauge. Sometimes a piece of debris will get coafgt in here, or a spider will nest in it. Take a piece of wire or a piece of weedeater string, etc. and feed it into the hole. Let me know how it turns out.
WAGS

If you don't have a tube that runs to the drive you should have a tube that runs to a pickup device mounted to the transom at the very bottom edge and the pick-up may be clogged or the tube disconnected

Wags has it right.... except for the part about air pressure.Speedodometer works from lack of pressure( vacum). I've heard of people blowing into the tube, wondering why they are able to get their gauge to register.

Good luck

Jim

I've had this problem occur twice. In both cases I had to clean the "very" small hole on the inboard side of my Alpha 1. I took a small drill bit and "drilled" it in with my fingers. This allowed the debris to be brought out on the bit. Hope this helps.
