I'll have a go at this one.. The standard Merc speedo is driven by a "v" shaped hole in the leading edge of the L/U. If speedo's not working, the tiny hole maybe blocked. Carefully unblock it. Aftermarket speedo's have either little tube mounted on the transom, or a wheel that turns (Electronic). To test the manual types, remove tube and have someone pump air in it while you check for reading. Electronic, you will have to spin the wheel.
