Speedometer not working at all.

I have a 1988 Sunbird cuddy cabin with a 1989 88HP Johnson. the speedometer is not working at all, tach works fine.<br /><br />Does anyone know if this might be a boat or a motor issue? The boat is new to me and I just put it in the water.<br /><br />Thanks!!

Have you checked to make sure the speedometer pitot tube is rotated down into the water?

OK.. I'm clueless here. What is a pitot tube, what does it look like, and where might it be. <br /><br />The only thing I have ever seen for boat speed is on a sail boat. There was a wheel that would always get fouled up with slime.<br /><br />Thanks!

Take a look at this:<br /><br /> http://www.tflx.com/pdf/marspd~1.pdf <br /><br />You may have to copy and paste the link into your browser.<br /><br />The pitot tube will be mounted on the transom, probably to the right of the motor, right at the bottom of the boat. It is designed to swing up out of the way to avoid damage to it. Many times they get tilted up and thus no longer measure your speed. It is probably made of white/clear plastic. It should be pointed straight down. Check it first.

J.R,<br /><br />I'm also have engine issues, so I havent had a chance to fish yet. From what I understand Fire Island inlet is running pretty good as well..

I had same problem. Was trolling speed and hit a log or something and heard a BUMP. When I started going fast again, noticed my speedometer stopped working. Put boat on lift, saw it was flipped up, I flipped it down and it worked like a charm. One note of caution, the speedo really doesn't pick up on my boat until I get to 15-20 mph so you may think it doesn't work at first....
