speedometer pickup on transom question

I am remounting my speedometer pick up back on my transom after rebuilding it but forgot to make a note of its location . How far does it need to be below the bottom to be effective ? It's on a 20 foot deep V bayliner . The transom rebuilding has been a interesting project but glad it's done My Thanks for all the support from the site during the project ! . What is the best way to post pictures of my project ? JJB

bottom of bracket about 3/8 inch up from bottom.
