I have a 1991 Merc Offshore 200 hp two stroke on my new to me Whaler. The speedometer doesn't work so I took the console apart and it's one of those speedos with the air tube out the back. The tube runs to the motor though and not to one of those tubes in the water at the back of the transom. Is this correct? Any ideas what I should be looking for to get this speedo working? Thanks

On the upper part of the front edge (cutting edge so to speak) of the lower unit, there should be a small hole just a few inches down below level of the bottom of the boat. Thats the pickup, It's built into the motor. simple test, pull the tube off of the back of the speedometer, run the boat. it you get water coming out the tube, the speedometer may be bad or the tube was plugged. plug it back in and try again. If no water, the tube is pinched, plugged, or not connected.
