can i put a speedometer in a boat not originally equiped with one? if so where do i get one?

Yes. Lots of boat shops should carry them. If there isn't much junk in the water you boat in, you can get a paddle wheel style (instead of a pitot tube) and it will be more accurate. Or you could get a GPS and tht will give you speed over ground instead of speed through the water. Beware of the pitot models though as they generally aren't very accurate, especially at low speeds.

Yeah, I would strongly suggest a GPS. Not only is it much much more accurate, but it can be used for things like calculating gas mileage. And you can use it in your car, etc. I have a speedometer in my boat and I also have a mount for my GPS right next to it. The numbers are allways about 10mph apart.
