I never gave it much thought but my Wellcraft Eclipse has some spider cracks on some of the edges and corners. Its a 1990. Is this a cause for concern or just from normal flexing?

Good question.

The reasons for the spider cracks may lie in your question as well.

Could be flexing, maybe hit the dock a little too hard at sometime, the gelcoat may have been applied a little too heavy in a corner or an edge at the factory, too heavy and it can crack. The boat is going on twenty years old and it happens. I'd be surprised to find an older boat without them.

I am having some repaired over the winter but they are below the waterline and are being covered over afterwards with a barrier coat. If yours are above the waterline, a repair may crack again if it is flexing.

If you can live with them, it might be better to leave them alone. I'm sure there are others here that have more experience and knolwledge about this then I do and will post a comment or two.

Spider cracks are generally no big deal. There are two kinds of gelcoat. The harder stuff that cracks and stays shiney for many years, and the softer stuff that doesn't crack but fades and oxidizes like crazy. Personally I'll take the cracks.

Spider cracks below the waterline? huh? I've only seen them on my boat at natural terminations (edges, corner, etc) what are you seeing below the waterline?
