spindle condition

hi all,,,,last season my hub rotted out enroute and i had a local marina replace the hub. Today, the bearings in the new hub that was replaced failed. I took off the hub and found the bearings in pieces. I am confused as to how the new bearings falied. However, I'm thinking that when the hub was replaced the spindle shoudlve also been replaced. I have enclosed pictures of the spindle condition. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

Bearings are a study in themselves. Your photo appears to be a case in which the inner race spun on the spindle, but it's not obvious whether this was cause or effect.

If the spindle was in good condition - i.e., not scored, damaged or marked when the new bearing went on, then it could be a case of improper installation. This can occur in several ways, the most common being forcing it on unevenly.

The failure could also be the result of overtightening the outer race against it, which preloads the rollers and causes heat and, eventually, lubrication failure.

It's impossible to tell without inspecting the pieces just how the failure occurred - it may not be possible even with them.

I just went through hub issues this spring myself. The spindle does look to be pretty well wasted. The step at the top of the picture is where the hub seals ride, and that's completely shot. You probably just leaked the grease out through the seal area, or pulled water into the hub. Either way, that would take out the bearings. You might be able to use speedi sleeves to fix that, and MAYBE if the bearing areas were still decent you could use it, but I think that's a bit question.

I really think that spindle is toast.

that you both for the quick response. I was hoping that the spindle was not shot, as i know it's going to be REAL difficult to remove by the looks of it....However, i'm pretty certain that it's a torsion axle with independent spindles for each wheel. Hopefully i can get that crown nut off...thanks again

Well right off hand it looks like the rear seal suffice if shot and may of been for some time. And if it was water got in and toasted the new bearings. I see a grease Zerk on the end of the spindle so that means its a safety lube type hub and is well worth saving. replacing the axle is a bit more expensive than a standard one but it is 5 times a better system than a standard hub with bearing Buddy's. Now from what I can see salvaging it should work fine, their is a bit of blue on the spindle and that wont hurt it. The bearing fits look OK you may have to lightly dress them up with a file.

Now the very back where the seal rides that area is going to take a good bit of work. You can dress it back flat and smooth with a fie. Don't worry about the deeper groves just file it smooth on the top of the fit and then install speedy sleeve with some gasket silicone under it to fill up the groves and seal it up, that will fix it fine.

hawker,,,thank you for the great information,,,,,i just wanted to ask,,,when measuring for the speedy sleeve, what method of measuring would you suggest in order to get the correct size sleeve? thanks again, bob
