I've studied this problem with previously posted questions and answers and removed the starter cleaned up the shaft, bendix and lubed with lith grease and still the starter spins but dosen't engauge if you crank the starter long enough it will finally engage but I don't want my starter burning up on the water that would suck swamp water with the wife and daughter on board. paddling a 16.8' fiberglass i/o isn't any fun.<br />By the way I am a fireman and we tend to over do things un intentionaly so is placeing too much grease on the shaft going to hurt anything? REMEMBER GO BIG OR DON'T GO

You're supposed to *lightly* oil the bendix shaft with light machine oil, not grease it. It does work off of inertia afterall.

whoops, any easy suggestions on how to remove the grease with out tearing the whole thing apart again? @#$%!&^* it! I was up untill 5 in the morning trying to fix that p.o.s. are there any more reasons the starter would spin and not engage because it was the same problem before I got my fingers on it.

Make sure you have a known good fully charged battery and at least 12.33 volts at the starter cable post. The starter has to spin fast enough to "throw" the starter gear up an inclined bushing. You might try brake cleaner and a small brush on the grease. Otherwise, it will have to come apart again, sorry.Hope this helps
