Spits gas back through carb.

Hi, 4 cylinder dual carb. outboard engine has new plugs, starts nicely, idles ragged, and runs ragged at all speeds, poor top end performance and usually quits running, restart easily, sometimes. When starting the top carb spits about a tablespoon of gas out the air inlet and then it starts up. My thoughts are that the reed valves are leaking, damaged, or shot. Before I waste my time pulling it apart are there any thoughts from anyone?

What outboard, SS? Obviously not an I/O or inboard.

Sounds like you are on the right track. When a 2 stroke backfires (caused often by to lean of a fuel/oil mix) fire pops back up to the reeds and will in short time burn them and compound the problem. :p
