Have a 1993 115hp that I am putting on a 1998 pontoon. Pontoon has modular wiring harness with system check guages from binnacle controls of course. And motor has big round red plug. Has anyone spliced a red plug on rather than buying the wiring harness #176711. Best price I have seen is $139 + shipping on the harness. So I am inclined to try splicing. I have a 96 and 93 manual so I have diagrams.

Re: Splicing red plug to post 1995 wiring harness

I am in the same boat I got a 1997 ocean pro 90 hp with controls, but the motor has a knock. so i replaced the motor with a 1995 115 ocean runner. and left the controls installed.

luckily my buddy gave me his take off from his pontoon a 1988 88 spl with the newer controls and it came with the adapter harness!! problem was it is like 15 feet long!! and i have it coiled up at the motor, since I already had the rigging hoses set for the motor and run under the floor.

I looked around for a shorter version of the harness and it is VERY hard to find , and they are like $150 plus!

the kicker is the 6 pin modular connection plug went bad twice and I eventually just cut it out and soldered the wires!! so i dont have a means to unplug it now!

which way are you thinking of going? cutting the ends of your harness and splicing a matching big red plug? or cutting the big red plug out and splicing in all the modular connectors?

or just splicing the wires direct sans plugs ends??

before that one connector went bad, i was thinking of just shortening my harness,

good luck

let me know if you find a cheap sopurce of adapter harnesses

they ahve soooo many different versions!!

they make a plug an play conversion harness, the wire color code is not the same.

he ackowledges as much, but he doesnt want to pay the price ( he says $139) so he inquires of anyone has just spliced the two harnesses together.

the biigest issue against splicing, is the need to remove the motor for any reason..

if you dont think you will need to remove the motor for a long time..then splicing is an option, although not a great one.

Re: Splicing red plug to post 1995 wiring harness

Was going to pick up a plug and cut the end off the wiring harness coming from the engine and splice it on. That would allow removal of motor. If you do not have the system check guages, CDI has a harness (423-6349) for around $90. I have the system check guages. Does anyone know how the system check guage functions after using harness adapter BRP #176711? Post 1995 motors have seperate curcuits for each function but a pre 1996 motor has them all on the same curcuit. That is the only issue I see with splicing in the red plug.

Re: Splicing red plug to post 1995 wiring harness

you say that right?

did you mean you will cut the end of the harness GOING to the engine!!

the harness coming FROM the engine doesnt actually leave the engine area!! it stays under the motor cover!!! and the motor probably had a wire framed hook to hold both halves of the red plug system under a black plastic cover bolted to the block!!!

I have the systems check guage tach on my boat and it works fine with the "ADAPTER harness" i have. dont have a part number. the Tach was aquired seperate from my controls. The controls were made for a 1997 90 evinrude ocean pro....my ocean runner is the first year for that style motor ocean pro -ocean runner looper) and it works

my adapter has a provision for the VRO , that i dont use , other wise Id think most adapters are similar...

good luck
