Sport Nautique transmission or V-drive problems

Hi,

We were using my friend's 97 Super Sport Nautique yesterday, everything was working fine, then today we reversed out of the hoist and went to put it in forward and the transmission or v-drive didn't engage and the engine just revved.

This boat has low hours 117 hours and just had the transmission flushed by an inboard mechanic. He mentioned that the water level in the bilge was at or above the transmission v-drive at one point in time (he could tell by the water line on the carpet)

So after we tried going into forward we tried reverse again and then it just revved in reverse and forward. This seems to me like a serious problem, but I thought I would ask the wealth of knowledge on this forum to see if it could be something simple (I hope). What would be the next step to either identify the problem or fix it? (if that's possible)

Thanks

did you check the trans fluid level? and check that the linkage is actually attached to the trans.
its not a complicated transmission but it is rather pricey.
good luck and keep posting

May also be a bad damper drive plate (bolts to engines flywheel).. The springs get rusty and go ka-phut!

Would be nice to know which drive he has. Does he have a Mercruiser engine or a PMC. Gonna determine which drive system he has and possible causes. Hope it ain't the PMC system.

I think Natique uses PCM's but I don't know if PCM uses Velvet Drives or Hurths. Was the tranny flushed as part of routine maintenance or was there a problem? Did the fluid look burnt? Did you hear any loud rattling when idling or in gear and idling the day before the problem ocurred (the rattling would sound like marbles in a can and probably stop when the engine rpm's went up to 1200 or more)? All the suggestions in the posts above are good ones. Make sure you are getting a full throw on the shift linkage and check the fluid level (the tranny cooler and lines hold close to a quart and only fill when the tranny is spins for the first time following a fluid change). If the unit was drained and refilled and levels were not checked following running, it may well be low (although it generally will have to be quite low to not work at all). You might also pull the filter out and check that the "O" rings are sealing. Also check the "O" ring on the dip stick.

If its a PCM, then its a good chance its running a PCM Power Plus transmission. These units have a history of splitting the casing and spinning bearings. Just tore one down for a customer and its cheaper to order a reman'ed one than attempting to repair them. But bottom line, got to know what he has first.
