Sportjet 175 jet pump problem

I was running fine (had it at about 4,000 rpm) and all of the sudden the tach skyrockets and the boat is going nowhere...
After getting my 1997 Sea Rayder back on the trailer and attached to a garden hose - the impeller is not turning. It's like a manual transmission on a truck stuck in neutral - if I move the throttle forward or backwards it just skyrockets the tach...
What should I look at first? (Hoping I do not have to replace the entire jet pump)

Sounds like I gotta pull the engine first...

I was thinking about starting on the bottom and looking at the impeller - but what your saying makes sense - start with where the engine connects to the jet pump

I have no idea how I did it, but I snapped the gear shaft in half (the large shaft inside the jet pump that connects directly to the bottom of the engine).

Thank goodness for eBay! I was able to get an entire jet pump for pretty cheap - I just hope this one works!
