Spots on the Lady's auto paint...

Last December a kid with more testosterone than brains didn't believe that he needed to drive slower because of the icy conditions, and slid daddy's car into the front end of the Lady's Sebring convertible. No structural or mechanical damage, but about two grand in body work and paint.

The work was done by a good and reputable body shop and all was good. But then, around April, some spots showed up near the center of the repainted hood. Looked somewhat like hard water spotting - irregular rings of varying shape - but it wouldn't come off with washing or waxing. You couldn't feel it with fingers or fingernails, as it appeared to be beneath the clearcoat. Couldn't even see them in daylight, but they are very evident under the lights of the garage. Took the car back to the body shop and they rubbed it out for me, albeit they didn't believe it to be a defect in the paintwork. They thought something splashed on the area.

Forward to June and there they are again. About a two square foot area near the center of the hood with little spots that look exactly the same. Not over the entire repaint area, nor on the windshield or trunk - just around the center of the hood. She and I can't account for them by any external cause.

My plan is to see if I can rub them out, after first accenting them with a water soluble ink so I can photograph them. If they show up again and the pattern is the same, they'll definitely be due to something under the clearcoat or the paint.

The issues here are:

1. Does this sort of thing ring a bell with anyone? Maybe a solvent or something splashed on the hood prior to the repaint?
2. I've never buffed out an auto paint and hate to learn in the center of a hood. I've tried polishing compound on a couple of the rings, but no luck. So I need some instruction/guidance, and that's why I'm here.
3. Is there any way you guys know of to rework the finish that doesn't hold as much potential for damage?

Thanks in advance...

If it has only been 6 months since the repaint I think the 2k body job has a "flaw"...Take it back to the body shop and if they want to give you a bill to fix it call your insurance adjuster. This sort of problem is common. I suspect that there is contamination under the paint because someone got in a hurry when it was repainted..If it can not be buffed out the problem is under the paint not on top of it. Go easy on the ink or you will for sure be on the hook 100% to fix the paint..

Most insurance companies guaranty the work that they paid for. I would contact the insurance company.

If it was a "Preferred Provider" or "Direct repair" situation, that is true. State Farm's program is called "Service First". All the major companies have one as well. So generator, if that is your situation, if you had it repaired under an agreement like that, you need to get the carrier involved right now.

If that is not the situation under which is was repaired, you need to calmly discuss with the shop what steps they are going to take to rectify it. If they can't/won't fix it, get a second opinion from another shop. Don't give them the backstory, just have them inspect and see what their initial reaction to the marks are. If their initial reaction is "was this hood repainted?" then you have to "proof" that it's a defect int he work. If their initial reaction is "what did you spill on it?" then you can feel better about the original repair shop's assertion.
