Does anybody know what that greenish blue stuff use to spray onto bare ground and up come grass a couple weeks later call? It basically grass seed/fertilizer and some other stuff all mixed in together. It just have to be spray on the ground and that it, no covering it up with hay or watering it. I have seen this done alots at new buildings and houses. I'm looking to fix a big bare spot in my back yard and and want to go this simple way.

Re: Spray on grass

The call it hydroseed around here. Looks like spray painting a lawn on!
Seems to work quite well too. I'm sure others will know more.

Re: Spray on grass

They used to use paper pulp (newspapers ground up real fine) and add that to the mix. It added weight and helped the adhesion. A good portion of the green was food coloring added for visual effect.

When we did major land clearing and re-seeding in the Army we used to mix the stuff and spray it. It stuck to everything due to the pulp including telephone poles. So if you were ever on Ft Belvoir VA about 25-30 years ago and saw grass on telphone poles .... that was evidence that the 11th Engineer Bn was there!

An alternative method is covering the bare patch and some garden centers sell green mesh (about 3 x 3 inch squares). You seed, mulch hay over the top then the mesh to hold it down (effective on slopes) and water the heck out of it. The mesh breaks down and can be absorbed into the soil.

Most of the bulk of that spray is used for mulch to protect the seed and retain moisture. Never knew that it might be ground up paper though. Makes sense.
