Welcome to Iboats.

For all the energy expended to unbolt the motor mount and trying to "slide" it forward enough to work on the bellhousing, you might as well go and pull it. Much easier to work on outside the boat. Less busted knuckles too.

With the engine outside the boat you have the opportunity inspect everything up close, clean it up etc..

You MUST pull the outdrive. Otherwise you will not be able to get the double lock washers and fiber washers back under the rear mounts, and without them you will be replacing the coupler again very soon.
Besides, after the coupler change, you have to align the engine. Being out of alignment is what caused your coupler to fail to begin with.

Re: Spun coupler replacement question???

With a complete engine pull from the boat, will the drive shaft slide right out of the engine or do I need to remove the outdrive as well. Also, if the shaft is damaged, will I be able to replace from inside the boat or do I need to pull the drive, as you can tell I really dont want to pull that outdrive!

long, am I missing something? Why are you so worried about pulling the "outdrive"? That's the easiest part of the job you have ahead of you.

Re: Spun coupler replacement question???

if your coupler is spun, your shaft most likely will not be damaged. The shaft is stronger than the coupler.

Re: Spun coupler replacement question???

Don, I must say, the photo associated with your reply is exactly what my drive shaft and coupler look like. I just replaced both items, as well as the bell housing gasket and o-rings. I refered to my mercruiser service manuals and did everything in the book "by the book" including lubricating the drive shaft splines which caused the whole problem to begin with. Everyone who responded to my calls for help, I thank you whole-heartedly. If not for these boards I could not have done the whole job for under $350.
