Spun hub

I've got a '94 ranger bass boat with a 225 yamaha on the back. I've spun 3 prop hubs in 13 months. Prop guy says it may be no water flowing thru the hub. Is this possible?

Re: Spun hub

Since that's the only place for the cooling water to exit(other than the small exhaust relief hole) I would say your prop guy is wrong.

You should see water coming out of the prop hub exhaust when you run the motor on muffs.

May I ask what type/brand of prop/hub you're using?

Other than hitting an object, the only thing that comes to mind is too hot exhaust causing the hub to soften and allowing prop to break free. maybe check cooling system and running temps.

Re: Spun hub

One prop is a Merc tempest, the other a yamaha 25m. I'm going to run it on the muffs tonight. Has good stream out the pee hole, 20 psi and low on the temp gauge.

Re: Spun hub

If your Mercury prop uses the Flo Torque replaceable hub system, I'm going to suggest that you try the Solas Rubex hub system.

It's interchangeable with the Mercury Flo Torque hub system.

The Solas hub is superior in that it locks tightly into the prop hub when torqued down to the specified torque(60 lb ft). In fact, it locks in so tight that it is actually difficult to remove. In normal service, I doubt it will slip. At least I have never had one slip on my Merc 200.

The hub kit that fits your Yamaha is the RBX 103. Iboats has them for $31.99.

I'm going to buy a new prop with the torque flo hub system. Just ran the motor on the muffs. Water is flowing out the prop. How much is enough is my next question.

Re: Spun hub

Are you tightening the prop to the proper torque? Does the boat+motor leave the water under speed and then return, placing great strain on the prop hub?

Re: Spun hub

In rough water the prop sometimes comes partially out of the water. At least it sounds like it. I know this is hard on it. The motor is on a jack plate, 3" below pad. I could drop it a half inch, see what happens.
