Spun or slipping prop?

I have a 5.7 OMC with the Cobra drive.

The prop I have on there now is an aluminum 15.5 x 15P. Pretty sure its the wrong prop but have been working out some quirks with the engine first.

I read on here about putting a mark on the hub and prop and seeing if it is spun.

Today I went for a 30 min cruise just to see how my engine runs with the new coil I put in and I marked the prop too to see if it is spun.

On the way back when we got to the small channel that leads back to the dock. I let my gf drive while I looked to see if the new coil was getting hot. When I took up she is texting someone and is way too close to the side of the channel. I grab the wheel but its too late and we hit the bottom. Its all sand but still. We were at idle speed maybe 4 kts.

It drug on the bottom and I immidiatly put it into N and turned off the engine.

I trimmed it up some and started the engine and got us out of the shallow area.

Checked out the drive and no dents or damage. None to the prop either.

I look at the marks I made on the prop and the mark on the hub and the mark on the prop have moved 90 degrees or 1/4 of the dia of the prop.

I have never had any of the symptoms of a spun prop. No high RPM reving or feeling it let go. I just know its an older prop which is why I checked to begin with.

So is this for SURE a spun prop? Is there a chance it just slipped some when hitting the sand? I'm not too sure how it works but is it that if the hub slips ANY from the prop that means its toast and its spun?

Thanks so much!

The purpose of the hub is to give a little under stress to limit damage to the rest of the outdrive. It is not necessarily a spun hub just one that has done its job.Put a fresh mark. And don't let the gf drive.you might point out to her at a higher speed, hard bottom could have been a couple of thousand $ repair job.

Ok so I wiped m old mark off and put a new one on there. Ran it about an hour and the mark had moved about 90 degrees or 1/4 of the dia of prop again.

Ran it another couple hours and the mark was 180 degrees or on the opp side.

I still don't notice any symptoms of a spun hub. No over reving or slipping or anything. Boat has a good hole shot.

What's up with this? I have only had the boat about four months and this is the prop it came with but I still know what a spun hub feels like.

Throw the phone in the water. Then get the hub fixed! If it spun, it's bad, right?

If its moving you might not have the symptoms yet, but they're on the way. Get it re-done or buy a new one before you get stuck.
