2002 Mariner 60hp 4cyl 4stroke. I inherited a engine and
was told that it ran but made a clanking sound. I removed the power head
and found that #4 rod had spun the bearing. my question is can the Crankshaft be ground to compensate for the damage. I have a Seloc manual and it doesnt mention crankshaft grinding. If it can be ground ,what increments 20-30 thousandths, etc? Im a novice at this and would appreciate
any information. Ralph

Re: spun rod bearing

I've had bearings burned onto the crank pin and thought there is no way that crank can be salvaged. Wrong! Even if the journal is beyond grinding within limits for available bearings, any good crank rebuilder can weld up that journal and put it right back to standard.

Mic the crank for any "egg"..maybe ya can just get away with new shell bearings if it aint more than a few "Thou" out of round..

Re: spun rod bearing

If it's a "few thousandths" out of round it will pound the bearing out again in short order since there is only .001 - .003 oil clearance to start with on a rod bearing. Get it fixed correctly. 6000 rpm needs a good crank.

Agreed..probabaly should have said "A" thou. Seen them worse, but like all here, without part in hand, its guesswork..

Re: spun rod bearing

thanks for the reply. Do each of the rod bearing colors, Brown, black , blue
equal a measurement in thousandths 010, 020 etc. Ralph
