Sputtering Suzuki 150HP - Any help?

My 1990 150hp has recently developed a minor problem. It seems very minor and is an annoyance that I would like to take care of. This motor is very clean and runs great, but now has developed a little problem at idle speeds and at blast off.

What happens is this. When you engage into gear, and this happens only sometimes, it will sputter a bit, bog down and sometimes die. It starts easy, always has, but even at idle, you can almost hear a slight miss.

When you punch it, it will hesitate for a second before "hooking up" and taking off.

I am changing the plugs and wires tuesday and I hope this helps. However, I would also like to change the fuel filter. Can someone tell me where this is located? Also, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated as to what the problem may be.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
brownspoint.com is an excellent place for Parts Look-Up so You can locate where the fuel filter is. It is in Fig. 20 - Fuel pump for DT150 1990.

You use NGK BR8HS-10 spark plugs with gap 0.35-0.39 inch /0.9-1.0 millimeter?

Make sure there is no water in gas tank. Use a fuel/water separator.

Also the fuel pump rubber diaphragm set could be bad and need replacement.

If it was long time ago the carburators was overhauled consider at next service cleaning+carburator repair kit for each carburator. Sooner or later it must be done.

Thanks for the reply. Alot has happened since I made this post. Let me be as detailed as possible.

I took the whole rig into a Suzuki service center. Spent $350 basically for nothing. The boat is running worse! They blew out the jets, replaced an O-ring in the tilt trim and supposedly water tested it. Their water test consisted of taking it to the river and putting the trailer far enough in the water to run it. The engine needs to be run for awhile to notice any symptoms and they didn't run it long enough.

So... I fish a tournament this weekend. I will explain what happened in the next post as I need to head out the door. This is good...

Re: Sputtering Suzuki 150HP - Any help?

OK, so, I have a huge tourney this past weekend on the Mississippi. First tourney of the 2006 season of the American Bass Anglers.

Right out of the gate pre-fishing, the motor starts doing the same thing. Warms up, idles great, but when you punch it, it sometimes bogs and dies. Starts right up, bogs and dies again when you give it throttle. After getting it going and up on plane, it starts surging and hesitating. I can run 66 MPH with this boat but could barely do 45 most of the time. It would catch and want to go but then bog down again.

I am no expert and that is why I am here.

However, I am thinking of these areas and you pro mechs can tell me if I am off base or not.

1 Dirty Carbs - My first thought
2 Water in the gas - Also up there on the list. This is what it acts like
3 Dirty fuel filter
4 leak in the fuel delivery system somewhere.

Why do I think this? Well, I noticed after running for awhile, I could smell gas! When I took the cowl off after I got home, I noticed a little pool, about a tablespoon of what I thought was water in the bottom of the motor housing. But when I touched and smelled, it was fuel!

Any ideas? Your help is greatly appreciated!

Sounds to me like a too lean idle. Outboard carbs (this is carbed right, not EFI?) do not have accelerator pumps and if the idle is too lean it will have a difficult time transitioning to the main fuel circuit. Try manually partially choking the engine to see if the take off improves (don't try to keep running with the choke on). If it does it is too lean and you will need to pull the carbs and do a complete carb cleaning/rebuild. Just because the mechanic said he did that doesn't mean he did it right.

Does this engine have a throttle position sensor (TPS) on the carb. Sometimes these can get out of whack. The synchronization between the carb and ignition is important also, maybe the mechanic was off on this also since you said it seemed to be worse.

Fix it soon because this happened to me and I ignored it. I burned a hole in my piston! The carbs had a lot of trash in them.

It does sounds like the carbs. I have a dt175 and had the same type of issue with mine when I got it. Mine would idle all messed up when it was cold too. There was a sensor bad but after that it still ran bad. I bought rebuilt dt200 carbs off a member on here and bolted them on....been cooking ever since. She still gets cranky when she is cold but once it heats up its smooth. I would bet its the carbs.

If you can find someone with DT175 or DT200 carbs and reeds you can swap them out and get more ponies out of her.....a lot of guys don't believe me on that but check the manuals.....powerhead and everything are the same except reeds and carbs. Just an FYI.
