Good morning, last year I replaced the raw water housing, pump and pulley and installed a new serpentine belt on a 5.7 Mercruiser inboard with a closed cooling system. The belt squeaks. I touch a candle to the belt (for the wax) and it stops but starts again soon after. Couple of thoughts.... Could it be a tensioner but if so why would wax on the belt stop it momentarily and secondly, just looking down it appears the new pulley on the pump unit is not lined up exactly, very close but looks slightly angled. Could just be my eyes and It is installed correctly. Anyone else had anything like this happen and can shed a little light? Thx

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... Are any of the pulleys Rusted,..??

Put a straight edge against the pulley to check it's alignment,...

I use Lava barsoap, the pumice helps the belt grip,....

Did ya check All the accessories when the belt was off, for free movement, 'n smoothness,..??

Re: Squeaking Fan Belt

I had a cracked alternator bracket causing mis-alignment and squealing.

You got a fan on that thing ? Awesome idea !

2-4-C lubricant on the belt might help get rid of the sqeeks.

As Bondo mentioned use a stright edge and make sure it's not an optical illusion. If the pulley is at an angle then recheck to make sure the pump is installed correctly and that "all" the bolts are tight, and that "all" of the bolts are there. Another had a simular issue and come to find out a bolt fell out.

Why does wax work, because it allows the belt to slip and not squeak. You could put some oil on it and the same thing would happen, Don't do that. Check your tensioner it could be weak. Give us a serial number and maybe we can find the speck for the tensioner (That is if there is one).

Re: Squeaking Fan Belt

Since the squeak or chirp goes away momentarily when lube is applied it is most likely a mis-alignment issue......

Here is the SN- 10243880 or could be 88C. It's a mercruiser 5.7, left hand rotation inboard with closed cooling. I have not be able to work on it since last post. Would a tensioner stop squeaking when was is applied to belt? I have checked and all bolts are there and tight. I'm thinking of taking it off again and reinstalling just to check. Thx!

I would put a 3/8 ratchet in the tensioner relief hole and move the tensioner back and fourth and see if it moves freely........If any question about free movement replace tensioner. then make sure everything is aligned correctly.

Re: Squeaking Fan Belt

Some times belts can glaze and cause a squeal. Especially serpentine belts since they wear on both sides. The smooth side gets a glaze look and can squeal. Maybe time to change a belt... JMHO!

Re: Squeaking Fan Belt

Ok, I did use a straight edge and the new raw water pump assembly I put on last summer is canted off about 1/8 of an inch and is causing the belt to squeak. The pump is not after market- it is a mercruiser part. I tried googling the installation instructions but can't find any. All bolts are there and tight. I think I mounted that pump the only way it could be with the hole line up on the pump and the mount BUT is there a wrong way to mount it that would cause it to slant a small amount causing the belt to squeak.

The pump only goes on one way, don't see how you could have done it wrong; that is provided you bought the correct pump for your engine. I'll also add that there are not that many different pumps so only a very slim chance it would be wrong. With it being off an 1/8 at an angle, look for a washer being it the wrong location, an 1/8 isn't much.

How about a pic
