Could be the bellhousing bearing, when was the last time you checked the bellows for water?

Doubt it would be the alternator or belt since the sound is from the back of the engine and the alternator is on the front. You're the only one that can hear where it's coming from. use a long screwdrive and put the blade up against the bellhousing and your ear on the handle, you will be able to find where it's the loudest.

Hey don thanks for the reply. i just bought the boat 1983 19ft bayliner cuddy cabin. the last owner didnt do nothing to it but let it sit in the weather. the timming belt pulley is all rusty.? the noise starts when i put it in gear. ill try locating with the screwdriver good tip thanks. i need to replace the u joint bellows it is weather checked so ill know if water got in then, unless theres another way to check? how big of a job is it for a mechanically inclined guy to do the bell house bearing? or is it better take it to a skilled mechanic? thanks !
