Squealing from alternator

I just purchased a 1996 Sea Ray Sundeck 240 with a 5.7L. The engine runs great, however, I started having an issue with the alternator yesterday. When I crank the engine, everything seems fine. When I increase throttle, the alternator belt/pulley start making a loud squealing sound. The more throttle, the louder the squealing. If I just let the engine run for a minute or so, the sound goes away. I also noticed that my volt gauge indicates a low charge when the sound is heard, but then goes back up to ~13 volts when the sound stops.

Is this an indication of a bad alternator, or just a bad pulley? The belt was replaced during inspection, so I think it is ok.

Thanks for your help.

Well at least the belt was OK !

your belt is slipping ! ( alternator not snugged up enuff?)

belt squealing and vlotage goes down
all indications of the same

are you sure the belt was sized right ?

check the pulleys make sure all are tight ,
check tightness of belt and condition since it has been slipping!

Also check the pulleys for rust. If they are, remove, sand and paint them. Rusty pulleys where out a belt in no time.

Can the pulley be removed from the alternator or does the alternator have to be removed as well?

You think the belt is ok? Either it is or isn't. Sounds like the belt needs an adjustment. The faster you go the more it slips. Tighten it up and check again for the sound.

If the belt is a bit too narrow it rides to deep in the pully

If the belt and pulleys are fine, I would use a belt dressing on it.

Re: Squealing from alternator

I checked the belt last night, and it was loose. I sanded the pulley as best I could without removing the alternator, tightened the belt, and all seems well at this point. There's no squealing, and the volt meter shows charge as soon as I push forward on the stick.

Thanks for everyones help!
