SS prop and hole shot

Will a 21" SS prop that has been professionally sharpened, cupped and balanced give me a better hole shot than a run of the mill nicked up aluminum prop?

2004 Glastron GX235 with Volvo 5.0 GXi

I also have a 19" 4 blade that I could try out but am worried that will over rev the engine.

Thanks

WAY too many other variables for that to have an answer. The fact it is stainless will not have a bearing on it.

is this a racing boat? im not trying to be smart its just I never saw where sharpening a prop made sense unless absolute peak max speed was critical, all it does is create a safety hazard for you and anyone near your boat

as to your question, you are asking if a sharpened knife will cut the water better then a dull butter knife and you already know the answer to that question

Agree on too many options and there are options within the options. You know nothing till you test a subject prop on your boat......period. Everything else is pure speculation, may be educated, but pure educated speculation.

Borrow or rent it and try it. Make your tests and get it back to the owner before you scratch it. May pay a bit more but what is satisfaction worth to you?

To go along with that, does a sharpened edge help on anything but a racing prop? I know that in the jet pump world, creating a knife edge usually HURTS performance. You end up creating more turbulence than a nice rounded tear drop shape does.

Anything will probably be better than a nicked up prop. If you need the hole shot for watersports, you may have to go with the 19P and watch your revs especially if you have a lot of people and gear on board. Personally, I would save my money on the sharpening, cupping and balancing.

I suspected that it was more about pitch than anything else but thought I would ask to see if anyone had a similar experience with a similar boat. I saw the prop shop offered the tuning and thought hey it sounds good.....

Re: SS prop and hole shot

soooo what you're saying is you currently HAVE that prop?

what is your goal.... If you want a better holeshot your best bet will be a different prop... more blades and less pitch... possibly less rake...

definitely try the 4 blade... it CAN'T over rev the engine unless you let it.... IE watch the tach and don't advance the throttle to the point of over revving

Re: SS prop and hole shot

I think what you mean is a prop that has been balanced and blue printed. In that process they thin the blades and check to make sure each blade is the same pitch as the others.

It can help with both hole shot and top speed if done correctly and compared to the same prop that's not B&Bed.

It's said a properly done B&B job will make a prop turn as easy as a prop that is 1" of pitch less.

Now adding cup is normally for lift and will not help with hole shot.

Re: SS prop and hole shot

Scuse me sir.

Cupping is for holding in high ventilation environments.
Rake is for bow lift.
Porting is for hole shot improvements on high pitched props.
Thin SS blades are for reduced drag, sorta like slicing water with a base ball bat and a Michetti....which one goes through the water with the least resistance, hence best performance.

Re: SS prop and hole shot

Cupping on the aft edge increases pitch and does help control venting, adding cup to the tips of the blades will increase the effective rake of a prop.

Yes but it has never been on the boat and is stock with a small ding in it. I'm trying to decide if it's worth the time and money to have it tuned.

Very interesting, thank you.

TRY it on the boat.... if you decide you like it then have the ding fixed... blueprinting.... unless you are racing and .03 seconds matters I wouldn't bother

The boat is currently in storage for the winter. In the spring I will be trying out a couple different props.

+1

Usually having a prop B&B is not a lot more than just having it repaired. I think it was $75 more the last time I had one done. The downside is that the thinning of the blades does make make the prop somewhat weaker.
