I've read enough now to be convinced to buy a Stainless prop. Making the decision of which one has me tied up. OK, I have '98 Reinell 230 open bow w/ a 5.7L Volvo-Penta Sx outdrive (claimed 280 hp). I am constantly in toy tow mode and typically carry 5-7 adults and 2-3 kids (1500lbs.) I run an aluminum 17 pitch 3 blade that does OK/good once on plane. I'd like to get on plane a little quicker and I'd like a little more top end too. Can I have both? I'm considering a 4 blade 17 pitch S/S. My WOT w/ current 3 blade 17 is 4500. A little below recomended but I'm usually about 3000r's pullin' something/someone. Suggestions?

Less pitch of the same blade configuration will give you more rpm and probably less top speed. Boats in the "duel purpose" catagory often have two props -- one for the toys with less pitch. That means less strain on the engine and a skiier because the boat will "get up" quicker. Then another prop for cruising.

I'd probably try something like a 15 Stiletto for the "toy prop" and see how it works on top. Depending on what aluminum prop you have, and it's condition, the 15 may serve you well as a single prop comprimise for both. Since you indicate you're in the "toy mode" most of the time I'd start there and then get a different cruising prop if needed.

That is a good idea to have a ski prop and a cruising prop. Any suggestions on the prop dimensions for a 18ft four winns with a 120 hp johnson outboard?

You mean suggestions other than what's in your other thread? Let's start with the basics mentioned in the other post. Once we get that nailed down, we'll get into specifics. Remember, this is a post about a sterndrive which has a lot less flexability than your outboard.

I'm just trying to get an education, I am really new at this kind of stuff, I've only been boating for a year or so now. What do you mean about the flexibility? I apologize for my ignorance, thanks for the help!

With an outboard we can change where it's mounted rather easily. Up or down or add set back. With an I/O you're kinda stuck with the X dimension you have. It can be changed but it's a big deal.
