Stain over Paint?

This is the year to restain the family lakeside cottage, last done in 1972 (!). Yes, it's many years overdue for it. I've already prepped by power washing. I figure a couple weeks to dry, then it's ready. We'll use an opaque latex stain.

Question is about the garage. A few years ago it was painted (latex exterior). Would the family be happy if I used the opaque latex stain over that paint, or did I screw up 5 years ago, and am I forever bound to paint it?

I didn't find anything in a search.

Thanks for yout advice.

i wouldn't say you messed up 5 years ago, as long as you like the color you painted it and plan to continue.
stain works by seeping into the wood to seal it. It can't do that if the wood has been painted. staining over paint will not work. You would have to completely remove all of the paint back down to bare wood.

Re: Stain over Paint?

If you can pressure wash the paint off the garage you can stain it with the rest of the house, avenger has it right but with any luck maybe you used an inexpensive paint and with a 2500 pressure or bigger and a 15 degree tip you can blow the old paint off outside of that you will be painting sorry too say good luck
