Stainless prop?

Well I finally put a new stainless SRA3 10x9 powertech prop on my jon boat.. Made a huge difference in the cornering as far as grip goes. Lost a little top end that I think is do to being slitly underpropped. Which I can live with ,but drives me up the wall is the chatter at idle from this prop.. Man sounds like the engine is coming apart from the gears backlashing. Is there any secret fix to this that someone knows of?????:D

Re: Stainless prop?

There should be little to no difference once the prop is turning. Did you replace the thrust washer with the correct one for the new prop? Is it all nice and tight? Torqued to correct spec?

Yea I did all that. They said it was due to the weight fo the prop and the mesh of the gears at idle. I would rather be able to hear the motor idle.

Wierd. The weight difference when putting in and out of gear is something different but after its turning should make no difference. Wish I could help but don't know what to say. That's a new one. Maybe someone else can help. Good luck.

Sounds like you need to have the lower unit checked to make sure the gears are shimmed properly. There should not be enough backlash in the gears to generate anywhere near that amount of noise

Re: Stainless prop?

That prop uses the Flo-Torq II hub assembly, which are known for their vibration(chatter) coming from the rubber hub not completely filling the prop hub. Make sure you torque the prop nut to at least 55 ft lbs to completely compress the rubber hub and get it as tight as possible.

If the vibration won't go away, you may have to replace it with a Solas. They don't seem to suffer from this condition.
