I have a fireing problem on my 1966 80 horse Evinrude. The cap and wires are suspect but I am told these are SS wires that rarely fail. My wires , if looked at from the cut end by the plug, look to be copper or brass in color. Is that normal? Also, Upon cap itspection there were was a gold colored, solder like substance on the inside of the cap that flaked off with a little elbow grease. Is that normal? Would a new cap and wires be in order? Thanks

Are you saying that one of your wires is cut so that you can see the wire through the insulation? If that is the case then of course you need new wires. How long has it been since you changed the cap and wires and done a full tune-up?

if you are not sure you are better off changing them its not normal to have the plating peel off the lugs in the cap it can make the spark track to another cylinder.also yes wires fail.i dont think they are SS i think they are solid copper. make sure you get the right wire you dont want car wires.if the engine is a 66 you might wanna do a whole tune up to be on the safe side. it should not cost you alot of money if you are doing it yourself

Thanks for the input.I did install plugs, points, carb kit, condenser, rotor and new fuel line and thats what made me think the cap and wires were suspect. And to answer the comment about the cut wire, the end of the wire that goes to the plug does not have a rubber boot on it so(I assumed it was the stock wire) you can see the end of the wire. Thanks again!
