I have read threads which seem to have similar charateristics to my problem but not exact. Wanted to get some opinions.

1974 Merc 140HP I/O

Boat will run fine for a while and then will periodically sputter, and choke like its not getting fuel and then stall, when load is applied. if I wait a few minuets it starts right up and may not do it agin for a while or at all that day.

Points are old, plugs and look good. -

If you recomend the point replacement does anyone have the correct gap? i beleive it is .022.

thanks,

Re: Stall when applying load

That is the gap but you need to set the dwell. All of this is on a tag on the starboard side of the motor. They should be replaced every year, along with the rest of the tune up. Chances are the points are glazed over and a tuneup will solve your problem. Points, plugs, condenser, rotor, plugs and wires, fuel filters and water seperator

Re: Stall when applying load

Thanks, looked for the tag and only found oil specs. Could anyone send me the dwell and quick procedure for adjusting? I don't see an external screw on the distributor.

You also mentioned a water seperator, only see the fuel filter in the black metal "cone" shaped holder.

Thanks.

Re: Stall when applying load

Problem is now -- engine will not start.

Have replaced points, cap and rotor, ran for about two hours stalled and would not start.

Feels and sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Have also replaced fuel filter after this happened. after cranking a few times i pulled the filter and very little fuel came out of the housing.

Pulled supply tube from tank to check screen, was clean. Also made sure the the needle value at the top of the supply tube moved freely.

Put it all back together and it started and ran at high idle for about five minutes until I turned the engine off. After sitting a couple of hours it would not start again.

Beginning to believe it may be the fuel pump.

Is there a test I can run to confirm?? Any thoughts or suggestions??

1974 Merc 140 I/O Engine Serial 3681922.

Thanks
