I have 1985 stingray with mercruiser 140 . When in the water it backfires and tries to stall when accelerating. Could this be bad gas it sat for a long time. When at idle it is fine. If so what is the best way to syphon the gas out. Must have a anti syphon valve. Any help would be great!

I just went through this same thing and it turned out my carb was bad; check yours out - when was the last time filters were changed?

I too am going through this. I will probably tear apart the carb and lube everything/make sure all is functioning well.
at 1500rpm or greater it backfires, coughs, sputters, but below that it's fine.

Depends on the filter - there should be one in the carb where the fuel line goes in, one in the fuel filter and you may or may not have a fuel water seperator - it will look like an oil filter but have the fuel lines running to it. If you don't have one of these, get one. Sometimes owners also put inline filters in so just follow the line from the tank and you'll see.

Maybe someone else can comment on the year - I have no idea. I'd suggest taking the cap off the distributor if you're unsure.

OK guys I changed the wires and plugs! The firing order is correct the points are new and treated the gas! It started up did same thing. Now it won't start and coughs out the carb. Carb looks like it was done recently. I'm at a loss. Could the timing be off all of a sudden? Oh the yellow see through fuel line was clogged but cleaned it out. Thinking I may have screwed something up. what do I try next?

Got it running again! Number 2 and 3 wires were crossed! Still running rough though.
