stalling in reverse

1978 mark twain 898 (350 now). iam guessing its the lower shift cable. runs good, goes in forward fine. stalls when you go into reverse gear. boat was sitting for a few years. we just dropped a 350 in too replace the old 305. other then what i have allready read about how too replace the cable on here, are there any other pointers or tips? or could i have a issue somewhere else?

the stall might be related to that switch that momentary kills the power as you cross from neutral into either forward or reverse. [ It helps prevent gear clash and hard shifts ] If, in replacing the cables, you got it off center, it might be activated while in reverse gear./ try shifting faster and giving it more throttle to see if it stays running or stalls. that switch is only active for a second just off the neutral position.

the shift interrupter switch is designed to work ONLY when coming out of gear - it has nothing to do with hard shifts or gear clashing

the op's issue is more than likely due to the shift cable dragging due to wear and causing the switch to activate when going into reverse gear

the only remedy is to replace the cable - may get by with an adjustment but not for long
