I have a 1969 Mercury 6 hp. It starts and runs like a sewing machine except after about one hundred yards it dies. I've put new plugs, rebuilt carb, new fuel lines, and it still dies out. The bubble seems to lose prime and when you pump it up, fuel runs out of the prop.

duckdog,

A couple things to check.

1. Does chocking the engine help, when it starts to die?

2. Does it have spark, when it dies?

Does pumping the fuel bulb when it starts to die help. If so you probably need a new fuel pump. It sounds like the motor runs until the carb bowl runs dry (about 100 yards) and the fuel pump isn't replacing it.

If you've got fuel coming out the prop when priming , sounds like your carb float valve is sticking open causing a flood situation , or possibly set too high. When initially priming the bulb should get firm ,indicating that the float valve is holding.
What does the sparkplug look like after a short run?Is it wet or dry?
