Hello Iam a newbe here. Iam thinking of buying a 1987 sierra with a 4.3L v-6 GM mercruiser.
There is a problem with the boat stalling. he said there is something wrong with the drive unit, something to do with the clutches.
He told me the engine will start, no problem. when you try to put it in gear, it sometimes will kill the engine. Also, it may also kill at anytime while the engine is idling in neutral as well. It can run with no problem for a period of time, and it may also stall after a minute or less after it is running. Either way it will have to be looked at and repaired. The worst case scenario is a complete rebuilt unit will set you back at the most $1500. It may also be a simple fix for $500 or less.

Vehicle Description

1987 Sierra 180 ski/family boat

Welcome Aboard.....

I Really Doubt it's the Clutch,... as there really Isn't 1....

By your discreption,...... I'd think the Lower Shift Cable is Junk,+ needs Replacing......
And,... Usually that means that the Rest of the Rubber Parts at the Transom Assembley are Also Probably Due for Replacement.......

$500. Might cover it,..... $1500. Should cover it,.....
But,... You Never Know,... Till you get it Apart........
And,... The Local Labor Rates will have Alot to do with the Final #s.......

Re: stalling

a car jerk usually twists wrenches with no service manual nor understanding of marine systems, there is enough difference to make a difference.
its not hard but a service manual is a nessecity.
the transom kit and shift cable kit will set ya back 300 or so. the price if you mess something up will set ya back 3000 or so.
read the procedures before wrenching.

As Bondo said Welcome to IBOATS.
Cars & Boats= apples & oranges
You will be buying a pig in a poke, BUT, if you are truly a mechanical kind of guy, you can repair it, WITH a factory manual. That should be the FIRST tool you buy. I hope the seller is being resonable selling a boat with known defects.

Re: stalling

Here is a link to the Merc service manual for your drive.
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf

Some time spent reading section 2A and 4A will explain how to do the shift cable and bellows on your drive.

Being an auto mechanic only means you understand the long block of a boat. And there are even differences there for marine engines. Everything added on to the long block, Dist., Alt, carb, fuel pump, starter etc. is all marine for a reason. If you don't think there is a difference, check before you spend the money or blow yourself up.

Iam just saying I know about mechanics I was in bussness for about 10 years. I know there is a differece & there were many times I would read from manuals. Iam not afarid to read. With a manual & help from you guys I hope to be able to do the task. I have been reading alot in I-boats forums already. There is alot of good stuff here, & good people that are willing to help. I tryed to find out about this problem with a search, but nothing I read seem to match. Thanks loads. I really like fishing for walleye. i use to go on vacation at least 1 month a year. Its been about10 years sence my last.

Well,..... It's Not a Deal Breaker,.... As long as You've got Both Eyes Open,.....And the Price justifies it.....

You should Run the motor before you buy,.... Look for signs of Freeze Damage,.....
A Compression Check is Also a handy tool....

The Other Issue could be as Easy as the Shift Cable,..... But it'll take abit of Looking to See........

Good Luck,.....
