Stalls coming out of gear...

So yesterday was the first real ride on my new to me boat. It is a 78 slickcraft with a 350 and a mercruiser outdrive. Boat ran great, goes in gear no problem. Issue come about when i would take it out of gear. you can pull the power back to an ideal it putts along. As soon as you pull it out of gear it stalls Going from reverse no different. I dont even know what to start to look at for this as this is my first boat. If the cable is out of agustment would that cause this? I have tried i download the repair form from adults only but no luck.

Time for a new lower shift cable. They start getting stiff and corrded inside and hold the shift interrupt switch engaged too long causing the engine to die.
Very common Mercruiser problem.
