Stalls Only When In Gear

My father-in-law has a 2000 9.9hp Yamaha. he says it runs great when its not in gear, he can rev the engine to any rpm with no problems. as soon as he puts it in gear, it shuts off even if he revs it a little prior to putting it in gear. i am in another state so i cant do any trouble shooting, and i dont have a lot of experiance with Yamahas. is this a common problem? any ideas what i could be? other than the carb or timing, he took it to his local Yamaha dealer and they rebuilt the carb, replaced impeller and checked the timing and they still don't know whats wrong. I told him to find somebody else to look at it because it seems to me the dealer is just changing parts hoping they will fix it (guess they use the lottery system to diagnose problems)

Has he had the gear case looked at?
if its siezed up or something along those lines, when its thrown into gear , it'll just stall out right away if the prop isn't moving yanno...?

yes, that was the first thing we thought of. it is ok

im assuming they also did a compression test on the cylinders?
could be head gasket or rings or soemthing along those lines...

no, everything checks out ok, like i said i runs great as long as you dont put it in gear. it will run all day at wot if you want it to as long as its not in gear. as soon as you put it in gear it shuts off. and before you mention the lower end again, remeber he just took it to the dealer and they installed a water pump, so if anything was wrong i would like to think they would have seen it (although you never know)

crank up the idle screw on the carb, see if that helps a bit, increase the idle rpm by a 100 or so rpm... ive had to do that on a few boats i've owned... did same kinda thing... idle wasn't high enough and when it went into gear it just crapped out

other than that, sell the bloody thing and get another one hehe
