have a 1986 johnson 60hp outboard. Idles fine but when put in gear it stalls. If I choke it or get it running fast enough before put in gear it will take off, but it usually stalls when put in gear. Cleaned carbs, new gas lines, tank, etc. Could it be fuel pump.

Re: stalls when put in gear

LCS,

I was having the same problem with my 85HP
Chrysler, except the best it would do was sputter for a second in gear before dying. I had disassembled the carbs 3 times and cleaned them. I finally did it again and noticed that a hole in the needle seat where the needle valve sets up against was not there. No fuel was getting into the 2nd carb, or at least not much. It idled great but would die under load.

I'm not saying this is your problem as it probably isn't BUT... if you haven't disassembled the carbs, it would be a good idea. Also that dip stuff that you immerse the carbs in, works real well.

It really doesn't sound like a fuel pump problem but someone might think otherwise. You might also want to check all your new fuel connections and clamps. Make sure everything is tight.

Shane

you could have a exzoust leak under the hood .see if it will idle with hood off in gear .
