Staple Gun Suggestions

Redoing most of the interior of my recently purchased used 2002 Glastron. I've been browsing the forum and youtube for vinyl restoration suggestions and I've recently gotten handy with a sewing machine ;) After I purchase new foam (soon) I'll need to start stapling the vinyl back to the wood. The staples are 3/8" staples. Does anyone have suggestions or pros/cons of an electric gun vs a pneumatic? Willing to drop some money on either but the electric is much cheaper. I'm wondering if the electric packs enough punch into the hard marine wood. Any thoughts or previous trials and tribulations appreciated!

I have an electric in the $60 range. It will drive a 3/8 staple fully into dried/aged fir. I don't know about hardwood.

IMO, get an Air stapler. . You can adjust the pressure for the material your fastening and they will keep up with the smallest of compressors.. There are good brands, but I have a Harbor Freight model and it works just fine. Trigger is a little light, but I think it was $15.

I have a Hitachi 1/4" crown stapler that I use. It shoots up to a 1 1/2" staple so I use it on a variety of projects. Lowes has them for under $100.

I second the 1/2" wide HF model. It has served me well for a lot longer than 2 or 3 electrics did. The darn thing, at least mine, does not have a safety so be careful.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the input. I wish I could say I'm excited to start stapling, but I realize how tedious of a winter project this is going to be!

Yep Air is the only way to go and 1/2" crown. JDA is 100% correct about using Stainless in the Marine Environment.

If you don't mind having to finish hammering in the stables in by hand, then get an electric. I have used both and the pnumatics are the superior hand down. And of course use stainless steel for boat issues...

I've used the HF air tools in the past. Good price & worked OK - but I look at them as pretty much "throw-away" once they have problems. IMO (and experience) no customer support for parts/etc. for older HF air tools.

For $15, to finish your job, why not? Then if it doesn't work next time you go to use it, throw it away.

Re: Staple Gun Suggestions

the problem with HF staplers is they don't use thin wire staples...using a T50 style staple damages the wood and puts larger holes in the vinyl increasing chances of a vinyl failure...if you do use a T50 staple, make sure to use Stainless or Monel, the increased cost is worth it
