I have a 1968 Starcraft with a soft floor. Can anyone tell me if this is repairable? If. So how do I go about it

Once opened up I realized all the wood stringers are totally rotted

Thanks Nick

Well you came to the best place to get that type help. There are literally tons of project boats on these forums doing the exact same type repairs. Read a few threads and get an idea what it involves. And realize that it is dirty smelly itchy work. But once you finish the repairs your boat will last for decades.

Pop up a picture or three of your boat and then we can see what you are working with and offer directions to get you finished the best way.

Hey thanks for the quick replies I appreciate it and it makes me feel better that I didn’t lose my a&@ on this boat. When I try to upload pictures I receive a message stating the file exceeds 2mb. What am I doing wrong here?

thanks Nick

Here is one pic i will send more tonight

I looked into Sea-cast but it is expensive, around $2000.00 for just the stringers. Will also look into repairing with fiberglass.

Any feedback is appreciated

Yea, if your pictures exceed the limit allowed, you will get that message. Resize them to a lower resolution and post away. Not sure the exact size capability is, but I know for certain my 1 MB pictures post without issue.

Well i have come to the realization that Seacast is to expensive and i will be repairing or replacing the stingers in my boat. Any advice or input it anyone has i would like to hear it. I have not done a project like this but am ready to learn and get the boat on the water. Hopefully cheaper that $2500.00

Thanks Nick

Hey Nick
ya Seacast is not likely going to do what you need regardless of the price.
it is amazing how sloppy and shoddy factory glasswork was.
looks like a one armed man did it in the dark😲.
lots of similar builds going on (including mine 1974 Duo Vagabond / same as a Starcraft Capri).
lots of reading needs to be done by you.
- supporting the hull to avoid distortion
- gutting, cutting, grinding, stringers, likely TRANSOM, glasswork, foam, flooring.

$2500 is a reasonable budget I figure.
its going to be one hell of a ride 🙃 and lots to learn but worth it in the end.

thank you for the feedback so far. Will it really cost $2500 to repair the stringers?
where do I begin to study up on repairing and or replacing the stringers?
i don’t mind doing the work actually I look forward to it. Just want to make sure I am doing everything correctly.
Any advice or good reading is appreciated
thanks Nick

Being realistic complete rehab, stringers front to rear, transom, flooring/decking polyester resin (most common) cloth, materials tools etc. $2500is a possibility but I’m not an expert.
the experienced guys on the forum always recommend reading the “stickies “ at the top of the forum list.
lots of great information and links.
read / follow some of the ongoing restoration threads,
you can also utube build videos such as Friscoboater.

I did my boat and interior for right at 2500. But it is a boat once you get there and it is new you start replacing thing like for me the motor.

My opinion and they as you know are like azzholes. Some just stink more than others. Just do it right with wood and glass. Mine lasted 30 years with poor workmanship and being neglected by the owners.

You will take care of it after doing all this work. So it will last as long as you want it to.

Sounds good thank you guys for the feedback. I do have a couple more questions

1) which epoxy resin do i use? is one better than another
2) Fiber glass is there a better brand or all about the same?
3) any idea of how much epoxy and fiberglass i will need

Thanks Nick

This link should be very informative for you.

Fabricating Decks, Stringers, and Transoms

IMHO you can do the stringers, deck and Transom using Wood an Polyester resin for some where in the $1,000 range. I'd start with 10 Gallons of Resin and 10 Yards of 1708. That'll get you started and you'll soon be able to see how much more you'll need. Don't order any materials until you're about a week away from having the hull prepped and ready for installing all the new stuff.

thank you is polyester the best bet or epoxy I know polyester is cheaper and I have read pros and cons of either.
I also read last night that is some cases guys have cut the floor out inspected the stringers and if they are in good shape they do not touch the stingers nor do they replace the wood. Is this something to consider or would there be structure issues in the hull with now wood inside the stringers. I am new to all of this sorry for all the questions

No if the stringers were good the floor was good. Why then did they take the floor up. Not something to consider. Just be ready to do it and get on with it.

From the picture you included I would say you’re looking at a total rehab 😐😳
