I'm looking at a project boat, late '70s 18 ft starcraft. On the trailer when I look down the hull bottom I can see some low spots in the alum skin between the ribs mid way. Using a 4 ft straightedge and feeler gauge the most between any 2 ribs is .025. Other than that no dents or repairs. Is that normal or a problem?

I would not consider .025 inches (?) in hull variance anything to be worried about. That would be less then a 32nd of an inch.

What does the rest look like?

That is nothing on an aluminum hull, any aluminum boat that has been in the water is going to have some waves.

Yes, 25 thousandths. It dos'nt take much to show, I just wanted to be sure. Hull, window frames & glass, hardware & trim ok. Any fabric is shot.120 & outdrive not sure, wood I expect to change. I'm stuck on an 18 ft SS I/O and expect to do a complete strip down and rebuild. I'm not concerned about the drive train. This model hull is scarce as hens teeth around here but older glass stern drives are fairly common and cheap. While I've got you guys whats the chances of using a 140, straight 6 or V6 in this hull. Reasonable swap and safe to use? Nothing agianst the 120 but I'd like to know my options before I lay down the cash.

So what model is the SC you're looking at? I did away with the old MC drive and cast iron lump 120 on my Chief restoration. Anything is possible with enough motivation and of course money.

Not sure where you heard using a feeler gauge is the way to decide on buying an AL boat? What you should be looking for are cracks, major corrosion, holes, impact damage, shoddy repairs and completeness of original parts.

When I saw the low spots the feeler gauge - straight edge was the only quick easy way I could think of to post a accurate question. What I can see outside and limited inside the hull would say none of the above.except someone has applied and painted over a bead of sealer outside where the transom meets the hull. I wonder if it covers corrosion, that could be a risk. I have some experiance and equipment for alum, I restore old Airstream trailers. Bucking rivets and sealing seams is Airstream 101. Year is '76, model is SS I presume, its an open bow. Last night I looked a what I thought would be a parts donor. Mid '80s S C 19ft glass. 140 mercruiser, winterized, fogged, looks and runs fine on muffs. New seats, stainless prop 2 small nicks, new battery, bilge pump, vent motor, ect. Fine trailer. Needs paint and remaining interior replaced. Guy wants it gone for about the price of a new stainless prop. Its a big heavy boat for me. Seems a shame to strip and scrap it. Maybe it has some rot to ease my conscience.

The donor boat sounds like a great deal. Good motor, seats, lots of parts. You will be left with a hull that you will have to dispose of.

If you haven't grabbed the Starcraft yet you should.

They sound like a perfect match.

I hear you on the donor boat "is it a good one" dilemma. Here's an idea of what a stored out in the elements, double decked donor boat looks like below the shine and new upholstery.

My 1988 Chris Craft 190 cuddy donor.

Grabbed the donor this afternoon its a 1985, in addition to the above it came with original documentation, manuals, yearly service records, full covers. And I'll be d***d 3 gallons of Supermarine paint, Epoxy primer, 1 each white and dark blue urethane, hardeners, 2 qts of anti skid deck paint and various other stuff. Invoice for the paint last fall, price was scary. Now I have a serious problem. Wife loves this boat and we do these projects together. Warned her about the rot, her response "WE will check it tomorrow". Guy says it was barn kept 'till last summer. I need a drink.

Only bad wood we could find was under the front motor mount. Got a happy wife. Unless I find a fault this SC V 191 B "donor boat" kicks my SC SS I/O back into the bucket list. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Any luck I'll get to use the info in the future. I'll start another thread for info on checking glass wrapped stringers.
