Hi,

I just bought a SF 16 Camp with a side console and a 30hp. Great boat and I'm excited to use it. Currently the transom feels solid, but I believe that its made out of wood (susceptible to rot). Can anyone confirm this and suggest materials to waterproof the transom? And or can anyone explain or redirect me to a post detailing a rebuilding a transom with new wood / or material?

Thanks a bunch

Welcome to Iboats!
I had to look it up, appears to be an aluminum boat, and yes most have wood in them. You might be better off to look/ post in the restoration forums further down on the page. Read the stickys in there, and feel free to ask away! We like to help.

Yep, probably wood inside that transom. There is, , or should be a "top cap" that is as wide as the transom and usually runs one side of the boat to the other, it's likely riveted in place. If you pop that top cap off you should be able to gain access to the wood inside the transom.

If it is rotten, you can remove it and replace it with marine grade plywood, or medium density overlay of the same thickness. You'll likely have to bond to pieces together. DO NOT use any kind of green treat! Bare aluminum doesn't like green treat, , or vice versa. Seal up any places where water could ingress to the new wood and you should be good to go.

i rebuilt a transon on a fiberglass boat a few years ago, i used a type of fiberglass board. can't remember what its called, but it was black with visible glass fibers running thru it. it was about 200 dollars cdn a sheet but it was very strong and waterproof. if you are going to rebuild use something like that and you will never have to worry about it again.
