I'm in the process of purchasing a new deckboat in the 19-20 foot range and would like to stay in the 20-25,000 dollar range. I've narrowed down my choice between Starcraft and a Hurricane, both outboard models. Can anyone give me information, good or bad on these 2 boats. Thanks.

Re: Starcraft vs. Hurricane

Eddie
I just purchased a new 2002 19' hurricane deckboat, Sundeck 187. It's a beauty. But I came this close (---) to getting a low end Starcraft. Both had similar good construction and fine heritage in the deckboat industry. Two things swayed me to the hurricane:
seemed like I got more boat for the money, and the wrap around windshield on the hurricane was just a little sexier than the smallish plexiglass windscreen on the comparable Aurora. The final point: the hurricane's F100 yamaha 4 stroke instead of a merc 2 stroke.
Getting good service after the sale is also important... afraid I screwed up on that one, not from Godfrey, but the dealer I bought from in Penna.
So that's my experience. Happy trails!
Mary

We bought a 2001 Hurricane GS188 and are happy with it and the dealer. The 115 Yamaha 4-stroke is quiet and powerful and the Hurricane is a dry ride even in rough chop. I don't know about Starcraft so can't make a comparison. The Hurricane seems like a lot of boat for the money; came with all the bells and whistles.

Boatneck
Did you buy from North Bay in Selbyville? I went with the lowball Ducky's in Penna, and it is a nightmare.
Mare

Mare,
The dealer is near Reedville,VA in the Northern Neck. Talked us out of a trailer since we have a boat lift and he makes house calls. So far, so good.

Boatneck

Boatneck
What are your performance figures with the 115 4 stroke? I was going to opt for the 150 Yamaha 2 stroke since I'll be skiing and tubing alot.

Boatneck
Yeah, I talked to the fella in Reedville, he was real nice, but he didnt want to haul one up to Delaware.... as it happens, I should have paid the extra 5 grand and stayed close to home, the Penna dealer has a history of lowballing and giving lousy service. I also think they dont get many women who want to know everything about everything. Maybe you guys dont ask as many dumb questions as I do, so I wore out my welcome. But I still paid them $21,000 plus a trade-in worth another $5k. Live and learn.
Mare

Eddie32
I can't give performance specs on the 115 Yam 4-strke since it hasn't gotten broken in yet. The dealer told us to keep it under 4000 rpm until after 20 hrs. But we've had six adults in it and was on plane at about 3500 rpm easy. We got the 4 stroke primarily cause of less noise and didn't need the extra power since we are not water skiers. The 150 2-stroke should do you fine.
Boatneck
