Can anyone help diagnose a start in gear problem? I have a 1980 Mercury 25hp manual pull start, shift on the tiller, which will allow the operator to pull start the engine in any gear (F/N/R). I had a 1992 8hp Merc and also a 1979 7.5 Merc which would only allow me to start in neutral. I looked at the upper lockout latch on the back of the recoil, and it only engages when the throttle is advanced past a certain point, IN GEAR. I noticed that this latch is only being controlled by the timing advance when the throttle moves forward, and doesn't seem to be connected to anything on the shift linkage.
I am not the original owner of the motor - is there a chance something has been removed over the years to disenage this safety feature or was the motor just not fitted with the shift lockout?
