I have a 95 5.0 Merc - Alpha I/O, she runs great - always under good care. Since last couple of weeks I have a start problem. If boat is not used for couple of days - it DOES NOT start, unless I use a quick start spry to the carb.

Replaced the fuel filter, seperator, fuel line (from the tank to separator and from seperator to carb) replaced the little check-valve on the tank... No matter what I do just can't seem to get it work. Quick start spry became part of my boating life... And of course each time open the engine, remove the flame arrester.... hassle.

I have three batteries and brand new starter on so cant be a power/starter related issue...

After I start it with the quick start she runs fine, next day starts right up. If I dont use it for more than couple of days, no way she starts...

any sugesstions?

Re: start problem

Electrical fuel pump or mechanical??
When you pump the throttle do you see gas squirting from accelerator pump?? If a carb motor??

Could be a bad fuel pump not getting fuel to carb.
But the carb should hold fuel in the bowl.

Re: start problem

To be very honest with you I do not know If there is a fuel pomp. When I pump the throttle I dont see any fuel coming in. However here is the question, if the fuel pump is bad and not pumping fuel to carb to start, how the heck engine runs after I start it with the quick start???

Re: start problem

Do you see gas in the clear plastic fuel hose coming off your carb and back down to the gas filter? If you do, the carb is leaking fuel and needs to be fixed.

Hey Tufan, I don't have any idea's about your problem, but you might want to slow down on the quik start. I've used it myself in emegencies, but constant use can realy bugger up your motor.

Good luck figuring it out.....

Jim

Re: start problem

Tufan, "Choke" have you an electric choke on the carb and is it adjusted to close the plate on the primaries "cold engine" to within 1/4 inch of fully closed when you start the motor? Do you advance the throttle once "WOT" to activate the choke and does it open all the way when warm?

Re: start problem

make sure choke closes.
make sure you get fuel spray from the accelerator pump when you open the throttle.
If you have an electric fuel pump it may only pump once the engine is running,it has al oil pressure switch connected to it to run it only when engine is started. There is a circuit that runs the pump momentarily when starting which may not be working.

Either way the carb should have plenty of fuel even after sitting for a couple of weeks to start the engine on. If it doesn't then you need to work on the carb.
