1976 1115 mercury. Bought this boat used 3 months ago. Had sat for four years. One owner very little use said to been taken very good care of. Used in AZ. lakes for sking. This motor runs and warn starts better than any motor i have ever had. Let it sit for two hours and no way can you start it without fuel oil mixture prime in eather of the three carbs. Have had mercs before and know the proper way to start them . Chokes close completely Start lever opens carbs corectly, starter turns as a new one. Had the merc dealer look at it. He said if he picks up the boat trailer real high with a forklift it will start every morn no matter how cold. He lowered the motor to the last hole. Still wont start unless i lift the trailer fron 5 feet in the air. Any ideas?

Re: Start problems

Maybe it is starving for fuel. Is your primer bulb hard? Fuel filter clean? Carbs clean?

Re: Start problems

New sparkplugs, fuel bulb and hose, fuel pump kit, carb kits, new starter, timing checked by merc dealer. Dealer cheked complete engine and found 125 comp on all cylinders with 1 to2 pounds variation. He says motor is like new except cold starts. One thing i have paid attention to is carb choke plates doint fit snug to the carb venturies. Have found if you adjust them to do so they stick shut when you release them. No matter it wont start when they are closed anyway.

Re: Start problems

when you did the carbs, did you remove all the jets, and clean the venturi, a small wire push thru them will push crap out. possible the float needle sticking. drop the bowls, and pump the bulb and see if they are all getting gas. what do the plugs look like after trying to start, and it doesn't. are the wet or dry. wet it's flooding, dry it's not getting gas.

Re: Start problems

Hi tash Thanks for the reply. When i cleaned the carbs i removed all parts that could be removed like the jets and small wired all possible passages, then put them in my carb cleaner. Then i pressure blew everthing. Even filled the bowl of each carb and blew slow air through the venturies. Fuel came out the back like it should. They are clean! Complete kits instaled. Plastic floats. Corect me if im not right i think all fuel comes from the bottom of the bowl through the main passage. Float level should not affect the start. Plugs are very clean and are slightly damp . Will run 45 mph never miss fires and will start anytime before you can get your finger off the key. Looks like i will have to prime when cold dealer washes his hands of it. I love the way the motor runs so i will live with it.

Re: Start problems

when i had my inline 6 1350, i had to practically flood it to start it, when cold. i would pump the bulb till hard, then place the bulb on the splash well and squish it with my weight. fast idle, choke, turn over 3 good times, then repump the bulb till hard and then put my knee on it. fast idle choke and usually started the 3rd try. it is the nature of the inline beast, that the are gas hungry when starting cold.
