I have a 68 Evinrude model #55873R Serial # J03806 according the seller {I just bought it} he started it last July and it "ran fine" but "needed a tune up". I would like to believe this seller person but just in case he was not completely truthful. I am looking for tips on what to check, change or do before and during initial start up on this long term stored motor? I appreciate your time in advance, Denny

Clean the fuel lines, clean the carbs and sediment bowl's, check that you have spark at each plug (they should be changed too), check your compression. It probably has points??? (I'm not sure of your motor) but clean them too with a point file and 400 wet/dry sandpaper...they should be flat and polished. That's the extent of free maintenance. Buy a repair manual.

If you get it started...change the impellar/water pump assembly.

Bob

Thanks Bob, I appreciate the feedback. Manual is on it's way. I am an old hand at four strokes, but new at 2 strokes and boats in general. Thanks again, Denny

Hello Denny
Your motor use a points triggered CD electronic Ignition. As you know it also has electric shift. There are a few other little things that make your motor sort of unique. I agree with Bob Grab a book. I also owen a 55hp of this vintage. I had to replace the entire wiring harness. My motor looked in almost new condition when I bought it, the wireing harness was shinney and good looking. While checking and testing the electrical system, the wires turned to dust with every probe. Also your CD amplifer is a fairly expencive piece. Do your home work first, it might save you some dough. Good luck have fun.

Bob's right about the carbs. If the motor was stored without draining the carbs, you'll very likely find jets clogged with sediment. It's that tan colored stuff with the consistency of dried clay, and it has to be removed manually with a suitable ream (small wire?) carefully, so as not to damage the orifices. This is the most common cause of poor running engines after extended storage, and it will not clear itself out. It results in a lean condition, which leads to detonation and destruction of pistons.

Thanks Alcan, that all makes perfect sense. That is the 2nd time you have helped with insightful info, really appreciate your time. Hey Alcan, since you own one of these "classics" I have a question. The seller sent a new throttle/ electric tranny switch with the boat [the old one is no good] what is the wiring setup as far as fwd, rvrs, neutral etc.[JPG. pic] any causions in changing out the old for the new? And I found a green wire in the motor compartment that is coming with a blue one direct from the leg, [I have a jpg. pic]I have narrowed it down to locations it should go, maybe you can help. Can I email you a couple of pics? Thanks again for your time, Denny
