One of the bolts broke on the starter of my 1997 Volvo Penta IO (4.3L V-6). My mechanic says the location of the starter and the broken bolt are virtually inaccessible. To replace the bolt, the entire engine must be removed from he compartment. He says the starter is OK, but the charge would be over $700 to replace a $10 bolt. Any experience with this out there?

Re: Starter Accessibility

Sorry for the misfortune, but from my experience that sounds like what would be required. If I were tackling this I would have to take the engine out to access this area to hopefully remove the bellhousing then the starter and back the broken portion of the bolt out.

Left hand drill bit on a right angle air drill with a piece of steel tubing the same diameter as the bit and a quarter inch shorter worked for me. I got lucky.
